Because you’re not getting much work done anyway (2013 edition)

19th December 2013

Clock in waste basketIt’s that time again! Time for MeanLaura’s annual collection of online things with which you could potentially be ruining your productivity.   That is, if you still even have time.  After all, Candy Crush Saga might have eaten your soul by now.  Here we go:

  • Check the status of the existence of the world.  You might have forgotten about the Large Hadron Collider but, fortunately, there’s a website to remind you. And, it’s keeping tabs.  So, if the LHC destroys the world, you can be the first to know.  Has the Large Hadron Collider Destroyed the World Yet?
  • There’s a card for everything.  No, really.  Being textually harassed?  Being pressured to post naked pics? This site has you covered (no pun intended).  Callout Cards
  • And, there might be a patent for everything, too.  This site showcases inventions that have real U.S. patents, but are the sort of thing that make you wonder if the end times are near.  Patently Silly
  • Talk to Eliza.  If you’re old, you’re going to remember talking to this early AI (yeah, OK, I’m dating myself a bit here).  If you’re not old, consider her your new best friend who wants to hear all of your problems.  Eliza
  • Learn how to generate the lyrics to “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall” in more than 1500 different programming languages.  Because, of course, you’ve been absolutely dying to know how to do this in Amiga Shellscript.   99 Bottles of Beer
  • Feel better about your own interpretations of safety graphics.   And, maybe contribute some creative ones of your own.  However, if you’re just looking for straight laughs or funny stuff to post on Facebook, this will probably fit the bill.  Safety Graphic Fun
  • Play Mr. Potato Head with real people.  Just start clicking on the provided face and watch the fun.  This one does get a little creepy after a while, though.  Monoface
  • Get vicarious thrills from the passive-aggressive notes of others.  And you thought library signage was passive-aggressive?  You ain’t seen nothin’, yet.  Passive-Aggressive Notes.com
  • Customize your background noise.  Sure, there’s white noise, but can you have it your way?  Can you add in crickets, coffee shop noises AND wind?  Personally, I like the fine-tuned sound of a roaring fire in the middle of the coffee shop, punctuated by crickets.  Noisli

What does this mean to me, Laura?

Probably not much, unless I’ve left your favorite out.  Let me know what fun and cool sites you found this year in the comments!
